The Beach was painted during one of Lowry's rare visits to the South Coast.
There is a preliminary sketch entitled 'Deal' which was published at the same time.
Unlike many of Lowry's 'heavy' industrial northern scenes, this seems to show a happier, lighter image.
Families enjoying a day out on the beach, the noise of the seagulls and children playing, the feel of the sea air.
A great relief from the hard toil in the Lancashire factories, and the poverty of the labourers in the surrounding towns and villages.
